Before we get into this travel day, I want to apologize for any misunderstanding about my last post. Today is August 12th; the Fantasy tour ended in Ferndale, WA on August 9th. I’m currently in Spangle, but will soon have to leave to make my way back to Indiana. I got way behind on the blog due to many factors that I’ve mentioned earlier, but in blog time we’re only at July 8th. Each post is one day, even if I did next to nothing on that day. There are LOTS of pictures and adventures still to be posted. So stay tuned!
Day Forty Three: Piping Hot in Palmer
It’s over. Done. Finished.
Day Forty Two: Leaving Valdez….
I felt much better after sleeping, though my lips hurt. I didn’t have any aloe to put on my burning skin, which was still radiating heat. I just used some regular lotion and vowed to find aloe in Palmer, which was our destination for this travel day. Continue reading “Day Forty Two: Leaving Valdez….”
Day Forty One: Cruising Prince William Sound
Before I get into the actual post, I want to apologize for the lack of updates. The places where I’ve had a good cell signal have also been locations where we’ve been really busy. And we’re back in Canada, which means Verizon restricts me to a half of a GB, which is nothing. I can’t move the pictures to the website with that amount of bandwidth. WiFi, if offered, is nearly universally useless at most campgrounds. And then we started down the Cassiar Highway, and I lost even cell service for several days. We are getting much closer to the border, and there should be no issues once I cross back into the U.S. on August 7th. Continue reading “Day Forty One: Cruising Prince William Sound”
Day Forty: Celebrating the Fourth of July in Valdez
The Fourth of July was our first full day in Valdez, and it was free from group activities except for dinner that evening. Before we get going, go put on your Depends or get a catheter. I took a boatload of pictures, and had to cull through hundreds to bring you the best thirty or so. Continue reading “Day Forty: Celebrating the Fourth of July in Valdez”
Day Thirty Nine: Tok to Valdez
I liked the RV park in Tok; we all got to wash the worst of the dirt/mud off the rigs, and there were actual trees and grass in the RV park and between sites. In fact, the site I had featured a tree that was within millimeters of my off door slide, but it fit. And there was a large-ish tree at the very front of my site on the driver’s side. Continue reading “Day Thirty Nine: Tok to Valdez”
Day Thirty Eight: Chicken
Ah, Chicken. Located on the Taylor Highway (AK-5), which is not maintained in the winter, Chicken had a 2010 census population of 7. Summer months swell the population, of course, but it is completely off the grid and proud of it. Continue reading “Day Thirty Eight: Chicken”
Day Thirty Seven: Mo Lied
At the very beginning of this trip, we were introduced to the motto ‘No Bad Days in Alaska’. We were even given stickers for our vehicles that said this.
It was a lie.
Day Thirty Five: Dawson City
Dawson City. Once the capital of the Yukon, it exploded in the late 1890s after reports of the discovery of gold. Men, and some women, poured into the city from all over North America, only to find that all of the claims had been staked by the time they arrived. At one point, it was the largest city west of Winnipeg and north of San Francisco. Continue reading “Day Thirty Five: Dawson City”
Day Thirty Four: Whitehorse to Dawson City
Three hundred thirty six miles to travel; we were told this would be the longest travel day of the entire trip. Mo and Sally were leaving at 0700 or earlier; Harry and Linda would leave at 8:30. We were warned of frost heaves after Pelly Crossing, around mile 180. There might be construction, as well. So, June 28th, we set out. Continue reading “Day Thirty Four: Whitehorse to Dawson City”
